At work I have my Marshall MKII. Two completely different headphones, for two completely different parts of my everyday life. And the more I think about it, the clearer it becomes that the choice is not about which is ”best”, but about what they will actually do for me.

What is actually new

When Apple introduced this generation last spring, noise cancellation was the big news: thanks to the new H2 chip and new sound calculation algorithms, the active noise cancellation is said to be about 1.5 times more effective than in the predecessor. I notice it most clearly on the train – the noise that usually lies there as a constant, tired bottom is simply less noticeable.

The chip has also brought features that were previously only available on the smaller AirPods models: adaptive audio that automatically adjusts noise reduction and transparency according to the environment, conversation focus that raises the voice of the person I'm talking to, and voice isolation for conversations in windy or noisy conditions. Also live translation has found its way all the way to the Max model now, which feels like a pretty big deal for the over-ear format.

In terms of color, they come in five variations – midnight, starlight, orange, purple and blue – and without a doubt, purple was my choice.

Apple's own headphone family

What sets the AirPods Max apart from Apple's lineup is their form factor. AirPods (without the rubber tip) are built for speed and ease, AirPods Pro add in-ear sealing and noise cancellation for a more active listening experience – but AirPods Max are over-ear, sturdy, built for those who want to immerse themselves in the sound rather than just have it in the background.

That was exactly the feeling I was looking for in private. Something I put on when I really want to listen – to a podcast during a walk, to music when I'm working with Amaelle in the evening, or just to shut out a messy house for a while.

Why Marshall at work

Marshall MKII is a different kind of tool. They are built robustly, sound warm and a bit raw, and feel right in a context where I want music as a background rather than in the foreground – without compromising on sound quality. It is a conscious choice: I don't want my finest, most "enjoyable" headphones to be what I wear for eight hours every day at work. Then they lose a bit of their luster.

So the split became natural: AirPods Max for me, on my own time. Marshall for work.

And so yes, that thing about ”seamless”

One thing that makes the AirPods Max extra convenient for me personally is how they switch between my Apple devices without any fuss – I take them off, the sound continues to play through my phone’s speakers, I put them back on and it jumps back on. No button presses. It’s nice. But that’s not the main reason I love them. It’s more the feeling of putting on a pair of headphones that feels like mine, in a color I love, in a context where I can actually be undisturbed.

Two headphones, two kinds of time

I think it says something bigger too: that different parts of the day deserve different tools. Work time and my personal time shouldn’t always sound the same, feel the same, or even look the same. Sometimes the best technology isn’t the most advanced – it’s the one that fits the exact moment you’re in.

Do you have anything you've consciously divided between work and personal life – technology, gadgets, or something else? Feel free to share in the comments.

Tech Thursday: Smart Life I just got a new pair of AirPods Max – purple, latest generation – which I use privately.
