Not as a perfect picture. Not as a finished structure, But as a living context where we encounter life for the first time through other people. That's where it all begins.

The first mirror

Before we know who we are, we know how we are met. A look. A voice. A hand. They are small things, but they shape something big.

The family becomes our first mirror. It shows us – sometimes clearly, sometimes unclearly – our value, our place, our opportunity to take space.

This is where we learn:

That we may exist.

That we can feel.

That we can express ourselves.

Or sometimes… that we have to fight for it.

And that's precisely why family is so central. Not because it's always simple – but because it's always important.

The same needs – all over the world

I find it fascinating.

You can travel all over the world. Change language, climate, culture, food, lifestyle.

But one thing doesn't change:

The human need for closeness.

In small villages in Africa. In big cities in Europe. In coastal cities in Asia. In landscapes in South America.

There are families everywhere.

They can look different. They can function in different ways. They can have different roles, different traditions, different expressions.

But the core is the same: That we are not meant to be alone.

The family as a foundation – not a limitation

It's easy to think that the family is something static.

Something we “have”.

But in reality, family is something we live in – and something we help shape.

It affects how we view relationships. How we handle conflict. How we give and receive love. How we set boundaries. How we build our lives.

And perhaps most importantly:

How free we feel to be ourselves, because this is where something important happens.

True freedom is not about standing alone.

It's about being able to be yourself – in relation to others. And that's where family plays a crucial role.

Freedom and belonging – not opposites

This is something I have thought about a lot myself.

We often talk about freedom as something individual.

To go your own way. To break free. To create your own life.

And yes – that's part of it.

But there is a deeper level of freedom:

To be able to be yourself, without losing your place in what matters.

To be able to grow – and still belong. To be able to change – and still be loved.

It's a different kind of strength.

And that strength is almost always built in relationships.

When family isn't perfect

We also need to be honest.

Family is not always easy. There are conflicts. Misunderstandings.

Different wills. Old patterns. Sometimes wounds. Sometimes distance.

But that doesn't change the meaning, quite the opposite.

Because it is often in the friction that we learn the most about ourselves.

About our borders.

About our responsibility.

About our ability to both give and receive.

A functioning family is not about everything being frictionless.

It's about there being a desire to stay in the relationship.

To try to understand.

To build.

What we carry forward

We are not the beginning of our story.

And we are not the end either.

Through family, we carry with us something that extends backwards – and forwards.

Values.

Habits.

Ways to think.

Ways to feel.

Way of life.

Sometimes unconsciously.

Sometimes deliberately.

And here is an opportunity.

We can choose what we carry forward.

What we want to keep.

What we want to change.

What we want to reinforce.

Family then becomes not just something we come from – but something we actively create.

Relationships that last over time

In a world where everything moves quickly, where everything can change in a short time, there is something special about relationships that last.

Relationships that are not just based on performance.

Not just on results.

Not just on the surface.

Without presence.

That someone knows who you are – over time.

That someone has seen you in different phases of life.

That someone is still standing.

It's not something that can be replaced.

It is something you build.

And it often starts in the family.

A broader definition

Family doesn't always have to look a specific way.

It could be biological.

It may be selected.

It could be a combination.

The important thing is not the shape.

The important thing is the function:

Relationships where there is closeness, responsibility and a desire to be there – for real.

That's where family is born.

Coming home

Perhaps this is the simplest description.

Family is the place where we can come home.

Not necessarily geographically.

Without emotion.

Where we don't have to perform to stay.

Where we don't have to explain everything.

Where we can land.

And in a life that otherwise moves quickly, where we are constantly evolving and changing, it is one of the most valuable things we can have.

Free Friday – a reminder

So today, on Good Friday, I want to leave you with a simple but important thought:

Freedom is not just about what you can do.

It's also about where you can be yourself.

And who you share it with.

Family – in the form it has in your life – is not just part of your history.

It is part of your direction forward.

And when we see it like that,

not as a given,

but as something living,

something we nurture, build and develop,

then it will not only be important.

It will be decisive.

Free Friday – There is something I come back to, time and time again.
