Fiskaregatan in Kalmar. A small yellow+green house in a block of green, red and yellow wood, with the water tower as a quiet landmark above the roofs.
We stepped inside – and there was exactly the feeling you hope for when renting: cozy, fresh, thought out down to the smallest detail. The courtyard with its old doors, the pear tree full of fruit, the flower pot by the wall that stood waiting with its white stars.
The host couple had thought of everything – and the location couldn't have been better. Right in the middle of Kalmar, within walking distance of a handful of fine restaurants and with all the charm that the old city center naturally carries.
One of the many fond memories from the trip actually belongs here too. One morning, at nine o'clock, a temple on my glasses came loose – in the middle of the holiday, in the middle of everything. I went into Optiker Tottie, a stone's throw away, and there I met two women who, without the slightest fuss, fixed it in no time. The kind of care you carry with you long after you've left home.
And then there was Noa. He found a long, very narrow, secret passage between two of the houses – and just as he stepped inside, a pigeon flew up, right in front of his nose. He just disappeared into the shadows. I called and called, no answer, my heart in my throat. Finally I got some liver pâté from the kitchen and waved the scent into the passage – and now he came, at full speed, his tail like a pennant. Happiness when he ran straight into my arms.
This is what Fri Fredag is all about. Letting yourself rest in the simple things – a rented house, a good host couple, a helping hand when you least expect it, and a little heartbreaker that ends in laughter.
Summer also included the sunny yellow tone – collars and leashes in a sunny yellow shade that matched the house on Fiskaregatan. Pu and Noa walked in their yellow outfits through the cobblestone alleys, and the whole trip felt just right in the sunny color. The dogs are always happy when they are with and included in everything, from walks to swimming on the sandy beach.
Tell me about your summer, I read everything…
A forward push from me, Maria.
