Happy National Day! 🇸🇪

Sweden's National Day — then and now

June 6th has deep historical origins. It was on this day in 1523 that Gustav Vasa was elected king and Sweden became an independent kingdom. And it was on June 6th, 1809 that Sweden adopted a new form of government — a step towards the democratic society we have built together ever since.

For a long time, the day was celebrated as Swedish Flag Day, a celebration that grew out of a popular sense of pride and togetherness in the late 19th century. It was not until 2005 that June 6th became an official red day in the calendar — Sweden's National Day, with all that it entails of fanfare, folk costumes, flowerbeds and shared joy.

Today, the day is celebrated all over the country — in parks and squares, at flagpoles and in hearts. With midsummer flowers in their hair, the dance around the pole not yet begun, but the feeling is already here: we are one people, we share one country, we carry a common history forward.

A warm greeting to the world 🌍

On this day we send love, light and hope —
to every person, in every land, under every sky.

May freedom bloom like wildflowers in a Swedish meadow.
May peace be strong like the birches by a red house.
May happiness come to you, just as it comes
— quiet, warm and genuine.

Happy National Day to you. 🇸🇪💛
