Valhallabadet – a piece of living history that is in danger of disappearing
Save Valhallabadet – when beauty has to take a back seat
There are places that are more than just buildings.
Places where form, light and material meet – and become something that is felt.
Valhallabadet in Gothenburg is one such place.
Inaugurated in 1956, in the midst of an era where architecture had to take its place and be soulful, a bathhouse was created that would not only function – but be experienced. Here there is a clear care for details, proportions and wholeness. A room where the body moves, but where the eye can also rest.
And yet it now faces the threat of demolition.
Form, function and something more
Valhallabadet is a clear example of when architecture reaches beyond its function.
- The lines are well thought out
- The light is allowed to play over water surfaces and walls
- The materials are chosen to last – and to feel
It's not overworked.
Not trendy.
Without time.
A room where aesthetics and use interact – without competing.
A craft we don't build anymore
What makes Valhallabadet unique is not just its age.
That's how it's done.
The mosaic.
The surfaces.
The details that didn't need to be there – but are there anyway.
It is a construction that took time.
Who had to take a seat.
Which was not optimized away.
Today we often build faster, simpler and more standardized.
It makes places effective – but rarely memorable.
What happens when we tear down the beautiful?
Demolishing Valhallabadet is not just about replacing old with new.
It's about losing:
- an architectural identity
- a sense of place
- an expression that cannot be recreated
Because beauty of this kind cannot be copied afterwards.
It must remain.
Preserving is also creating
In a time where we are talking about sustainability – we should also talk about aesthetic sustainability.
To preserve is not to stand still.
It is to value what is already thought out, built and loved.
The Valhalla swimming pool can be renovated.
It can develop.
It can continue to be a place where both body and mind have space.
A quiet question
When we choose to reject what is beautiful –
What do we choose instead?
Brilliant Saturday ✨
Form. Feeling. What gets to stay.
